Via Just Creative.

So I read this article from our twitter feed. This logo’s been out for a while, but the quotes in the article and comments are pretty negative, which was interesting, because personally, I like it.

Here’s why:
The bangs and upturned nose do give a youthful appearance. The color is brighter, the necks are pretty long and straight and at first a little strange if you’re used to the old logo, but it gives a sense of movement and energy, I think. The previous logo by comparison seems a little static. It has a nice combination of straight and round edges which makes it overall more interesting.

Not that the previous logo was a bad logo. Heck no. As stated in the article, Saul Bass designed the logo in 1978. It’s too recognizable and cherished to be totally re-vamped. However, one reader quoted in the article stated, “The nerve to think you can improve on a logo by Saul Bass. I would’ve rather seen this be completely replaced with something else than see a master’s work disrespected.” That to me is a problem. Firstly, when young designers deify famous designers to the extent that they cry foul when a mark or logo is changed or even slightly altered you run the risk of making things stale in the long run. People change, society changes, design eventually has to change with it.

Secondly, that commenter also had another interesting statement: They would rather see the logo change completely than see Saul Bass’ work ‘disrespected’. Saul Bass made an incredible mark. He made it. It is his work, but it does not belong to him. The Girl Scouts of America called for this re-branding because they decided they needed it. In the end a logo’s function is to represent who it belongs to, not the designer who made it.

This is just my opinion though. Write yours in the comments!
