Elections are over!

(All newly-elected officials meet next Thursday at 6pm before the meeting.)

Attendance:

Katie Abbot, Kelli Annison, Lindsay Brown, Jacob Cotton, Rushing Haise, Mat Lejeune, Laura Maggio, Kiersten Martin, Cory Miller, Ryan Rushing, Geoff Thibeau

Camping Trip: New Information

Date: June 5-7, 2009
Where: Buffalo River National Park in Arkansas:
What we do: We’ll be renting canoes and doing a 3-day float down the river by day and setting camp/sleeping by the river at night.

What to Bring:

$60 per person for canoe rentals (Renting a canoe runs at $40 a day, or $20 per person a day (2 people to a canoe, for you non-girl/boy scouts) for three days, which is $60 for the whole weekend. See, we creative types can do math!)

Sleeping bag, Sunblock, Swim suit and shoes, Soap on a Rope (Ivory floats the best), Shampoo and other toiletries don’t forget Camping Toilet Paper!!

Food:

Canned food, sealed snacks, lots of water/gatorade/hydration!
If you’re bringing alcohol, remember: alcohol dehydrates, so bring other fluids as well, and nothing you bring should be encased in glass. Ever.

Bring metal cooking gear! Great for heating!

Handy Items:

Knife, small flashlight, sealable wet bags / garbage bags to keep things dry.

Think about bringing Camel packs, a hatchet or camp saw, a first aid kit or a camp shovel. These aren’t required, but they’re nice to have.

What We’re About (A Recap)

Every year, UG2 brings graphic design students together to better enable them for the design world outside of Louisiana Tech. Tutorials, workshops, studio tours (such as Mad Genius and Eyevox) and student conferences (DSVC, anyone?) are all within a UG2 member’s reach.

But we don’t always have our heads in front of our computer screens. We also know how to have fun. Lots of fun. UG2 hosts a cook out in the fall quarter and a canoe trip to Arkansas in June. Throw in some laser tag, (Jacob Cotton currently has a bounty on his head, if you can tag him, he’ll give you $25, he’s that good, apparently) and you’ll end up with an amazingly fun school year full of creativity, networking, and a wicked edge.

So how do we manage all this?

Member fees and fund raising are vital for UG2 to be able to give back to its members, mainly in the form of free rides and rooms at student conferences such as DSVC. Fees for each quarter are not all the same; it’s best to join in the fall when the fee is only $20. Winter quarter is steeper ($35), and spring is a staggering $120 (in preparation for DSVC).

So, join if you haven’t already. You’ll get a lot more than bonus points.

Camping, that’s what! There’s nothing like a few days away from technology-ridden civilization to boost creativity.

The camping trip will consist of a two-day canoe float down the Buffalo River, which is located in northern Arkansas. As of now, the first weekend in June is the best date for the trip, so keep checking the site for a supply list and general information about what to expect, as it’s coming up fast. If you can’t wait, Jacob/Katie has all the details.

Next Week

April 23, 2009
Nominations for all UG2 leadership positions (President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary) for 2009-2010 can be submitted at this time and will be open throughout the week. For a student to be eligible for election, they must have more than 60 credit hours, with the exception of secretary. And all positions must be kept until May 2010 (so if you’re graduating in the winter, tough).

Voting will take place two weeks from now.

If you do not sell 15 donuts by the 10th, there will be problems. If you do plan on going to DISH and/or DSVC and do not sell the quota, you will have to go to three workshops, doing work, and then work Tolliver front desk to sell the works.
You are more than welcomed to sell at places other than given.
The top seller will receive $50 dollars. (Chad has 18 so far)

We will be meeting Friday, February 27 in the front parking lot of VAC around 6 a.m. We have to be at the facility by 10 a.m. Driving accommodations will be determined at a later date.

Trips

Second Hand Rose Antiques/Shreveport Boardwalk

Jacob Cotton announced we will be taking a trip to Second Hand Rose Antiques (Google Map) and Shreveport’s Boardwalk on January 17th, 2009. Second Hand Rose Antiques, located in Minden, LA, is a locally owned store that sells antiques collected over the past century. Cotton said, “There are four floors of books, signs, even letter blocks like Katie bought and so much more. Such as every different type of Coke logo sign made over the years.”

We will be leaving 10:00 am Saturday, January 17th, and visiting Second Hand Rose Antiques and than will be traveling to the Shreveport Boardwalk to do some “Boardwalk Bounding™” and chow down on buffalo wings. Returning to Ruston later that night. Further details and traveling commendations will be determined next meeting.

Mad Genius

Chill announced tonight that the Mad Genius Trip is canceled until further notice. Hill did say the trip can still happen, it is just a matter of finding the right time for both parties.

Atlanta Museum of Design

For an update to the Atlanta trip, Mathew LeJeune and Cory Miller visited the museum on a recent trip to New York and reported back saying it is probably not worth it. Jacob said, “It is still possible to go, it is up to the group.”

An alternive was brought up by Mrs Hooker, dish.

Nashville DISH

AIGA Nashville is hosting its 5th annual dish: student design conference. For the most part, the trip would be the same in distance, time, and the like. Only difference would be the entrance fee.

“This would be a great opportunity for all members, as it gives them a chance to speak and listen to professionals in the exact field they want to be in,” according to Jacob. For one example, the opening night, Patrick Coyne, owner/editor for Communication Arts Magazine, will be giving a speech.

Further details will be given at the next meeting. For more information regarding the show itself visit the following site: AIGA Nashville.

Store

For the online store, we have decided to have a work day for all members to create original work to sell on the store. Profits will be split between the creator and UG2. A meeting outside the general meeting time will be decided on next general meeting.

Publicity Committee

The Publicity Committee is no more. Instead, it has been decided the council will oversee all publicity for UG2. Input from members for ideas towards advertising, creating t-shirts, buttons, etc are more than welcome. Just talk to one of the council members for more information.

Fund-raising

A new fund-raising idea has been brought to the table by Katie: sell donuts. In conjunction with Krispy Kreme Donuts, we would be able to buy a dozen donuts for $2.60 a box from them and resell the donuts at a higher price. All profits above $2.60 would be profit to UG2. Members will be split into teams to find businesses and individuals around Ruston to pre-order the donuts, and they will be delivered on a yet to be announced date. More details next meeting.

Council Meeting

The Council will now be meeting on a separate date from the general meeting: Tuesdays. The new meeting time for council members will allow us to communicate with each other on a higher rate and allow us to have everything ready for general meetings come Thursdays.

This ends the minutes for January 9th. See you at the next meeting!
