Trips

Second Hand Rose Antiques/Shreveport Boardwalk

Jacob Cotton announced we will be taking a trip to Second Hand Rose Antiques (Google Map) and Shreveport’s Boardwalk on January 17th, 2009. Second Hand Rose Antiques, located in Minden, LA, is a locally owned store that sells antiques collected over the past century. Cotton said, “There are four floors of books, signs, even letter blocks like Katie bought and so much more. Such as every different type of Coke logo sign made over the years.”

We will be leaving 10:00 am Saturday, January 17th, and visiting Second Hand Rose Antiques and than will be traveling to the Shreveport Boardwalk to do some “Boardwalk Bounding™” and chow down on buffalo wings. Returning to Ruston later that night. Further details and traveling commendations will be determined next meeting.

Mad Genius

Chill announced tonight that the Mad Genius Trip is canceled until further notice. Hill did say the trip can still happen, it is just a matter of finding the right time for both parties.

Atlanta Museum of Design

For an update to the Atlanta trip,  Mathew LeJeune and Cory Miller visited the museum on a recent trip to New York and reported back saying it is probably not worth it. Jacob said, “It is still possible to go, it is up to the group.”

An alternive was brought up by Mrs Hooker, dish.

Nashville DISH

AIGA Nashville is hosting its 5th annual dish: student design conference. For the most part, the trip would be the same in distance, time, and the like. Only difference would be the entrance fee.

“This would be a great opportunity for all members, as it gives them a chance to speak and listen to professionals in the exact field they want to be in,” according to Jacob. For one example, the opening night, Patrick Coyne, owner/editor for Communication Arts Magazine, will be giving a speech.

Further details will be given at the next meeting. For more information regarding the show itself visit the following site: AIGA Nashville.

Store

For the online store, we have decided to have a work day for all members to create original work to sell on the store. Profits will be split between the creator and UG2. A meeting outside the general meeting time will be decided on next general meeting.

Publicity Committee

The Publicity Committee is no more. Instead, it has been decided the council will oversee all publicity for UG2. Input from members for ideas towards advertising, creating t-shirts, buttons, etc are more than welcome. Just talk to one of the council members for more information.

Fund-raising

A new fund-raising idea has been brought to the table by Katie: sell donuts. In conjunction with Krispy Kreme Donuts, we would be able to buy a dozen donuts for $2.60 a box from them and resell the donuts at a higher price. All profits above $2.60 would be profit to UG2. Members will be split into teams to find businesses and individuals around Ruston to pre-order the donuts, and they will be delivered on a yet to be announced date. More details next meeting.

Council Meeting

The Council will now be meeting on a separate date from the general meeting: Tuesdays. The new meeting time for council members will allow us to communicate with each other on a higher rate and allow us to have everything ready for general meetings come Thursdays.

This ends the minutes for January 9th. See you at the next meeting!

A Great Start

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Hello Everyone,

Just let me start out by saying how thankful I am to all those who joined us this evening during the first meeting of the year. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves and I hope you’re ready for this really big year we have laid out in front of us. Remember that in order for this group to give a lot it will take you to give a little; together we can insure this year’s success.

If you didn’t show up tonight, it’s never to late to join. We always welcome fresh faces and ideas. Through this website, Facebook, and email, you may contact us at anytime concerning anything. That’s what UG2 was built for; to tend to the needs and concerns of design students like you.

If you missed out tonight, some of the things we talked about were membership dues, past trips and fun times and most importantly the trips and fun times that lay ahead in this coming year. We also talked about our new meeting format, which will be less business and more about education and discussion of design, as well as our goal of having at the least one seminar every other week. Listed below are some of our high points as well as some of the seminars that are planned out.

Trips

  • Atlanta, Georgia (fall quarter Oct 24, 25, 26th) for a visit to the Museum of Design,
